Dublin London: William Curry Jr William S. Orr, 1841. Two Volumes. Harry Lorrequer was the pseudonym of Charles James Lever (1806-1872), an Anglo-Irish novelist whose popularity rivaled Dickens or Thackeray. This is a First Edition copy of his second published novel, a picaresque Irish talethat was originally issued in monthly parts. The illustrations are by Phiz (Hablot Knight Brown, 1815-1882). Both volumes in Very Good condition. The marbled boards have been shelf-rubbed but the leather spines are quite nice, with a warm tone to the leather and bright gilt lettering. Moderate foxing (particularly to the plates), some penciled notations, evidence of previous moisture. This is an ex-libris copy, from Downside Abbey, home of a Benedictine order founded in 1605. But there are minimal markings: small bookplates are affixed to the front paste-downs and a call number is inked on the Title Pages. The FFEP of Volume One has been clipped. Withal, a decent set with an interesting association. Size: 8vo - over 7 - 9 tall. First Edition.. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket.
