Bookplate on front paste-down. Chip out of head of spine. Many variants were done of this work. This is the first state of the 1873 first edition with all of the points described in BAL. These include: White etc. on title page, "Eschol Sellers" under the chapter heading for Chapter 5 on page (vii), final illustration numbered 211 instead of 212 on page xvi, no comma after Hallelujah on page 246, line 5, period after Dr. Jackson on page 280, no illustration on page 403, lines are repeated on the top and bottom of pages 351 and 352.
