Hartford: The American Publishing Company, 1875. First Edition second state. Very good in its original full leather covered boards (sheep), but rebacked in comparable leather some years ago and lacking a title block on the spine. An octavo of 8 3/8 by 6 1/2 inches with a 1/2 by 1/8 inch deep chip to the leather at the heel of the spine and a 2 1/4 inch closed tear to the upper front joint of the rebacked spine which has been professionally repaired. The leather is also rubbed through over the tips of the boards and a $2.00 price has been written in ink on the first free end page. This title like so many of Twain s books were sold by subscription. Buyers were given the choice of binding and able to elect blue cloth, with or without gilt edges, leather (sheep) or half morocco. A collection of short sketches by Twain with numerous line engravings illustrating the text. Without the duplicated footnote from page 119 appearing on page 120 and with Hospital Days not present on page 299. (BAL 3364)
