Some notable features include an essay on the history of witchcraft, in light of the publication of a history of the Salem Witch Trials by Charles Upham; a lengthy commentary on the poetry of Anne Bradstreet upon the publication of an anthology edited by John Harvard Ellis (which included previously unpublished prose miscellany); an essay on the translation of the Veda, the sacred texts of Hinduism; an essay praising the popular appeal of Charles Dickens; and a review of the famous theological debate between Thomas Vickers and Archbishop Purcell of Cincinnati, judging Vickers to be the winner.
