Listed here is a hardcover printing of Anna Karenina (Анна Каренина), by Leo Tolstoy (Лев Николаевич Толстой). Kuibyshev : Kuibyshev Book Publishing House (Куйбышевское книжное издательство), 1955. Quarter-bound in burgundy book cloth and red-orange leather boards. Gift inscription in ink on the front pastedown and first free endpaper. Gift inscription on first free endpaper indicates that the book was gifted to someone's "favorite girl" on October 30, 1955, who then gave the book to her daughter on March 30, 1956. A rough translation of the gift inscription on the front pastedown (courtesy of Google Lens and our bookseller's rusty college Russian): "To my beloved daughter on this day, March 30, 1956. Giving you my favorite books. Endless kisses, Mama." Anna Karenina is a classic Russian novel about a married aristocrat who begins a passionate, tragic affair with Count Vronsky, defying societal norms in 19th-century Russia. The story contrasts her doomed romance with the parallel life of Konstantin Levin, a landowner seeking meaning in family and faith, and explores themes of love, marriage, hypocrisy, and social change. It famously opens with the line, "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way". A beautiful and storied Soviet-era copy of the canonical Russian text.
