Herbert Gorman's "The Place Called Dagon" in its original dust-jacket. It was read by Lovecraft and very likely influenced him, particularly in "The Dunwich Horror", written a year later. Several similarities, especially as it also takes place in a New England village where ancient evil is discovered. Lovecraft, incomparing to some other stories, said it was "...a less subtle and well-balanced but nevertheless highly effective creation...". 8vo., Octavo, 315pp. Bound in woven blue/gray cloth with titles in gilt on spine and front board. The book is square, tight and clean throughout with very mild page toning. Front hinge starting but quite firm. A slight crease in the spine cloth and the lettering is dulled. A solid, Very Good copy. The clipped jacket is just about Near Fine. It has some fairly mild edge-wear and some areas of rubbing. But still fresh and bright with no chipping, creases, toning or tears. An incredibly scarce dust-jacket in any condition. The icing on the cake is that this copy is inscribed by the author to Herbert Asbury, best known for his "Gangs of New York", was also editor for the horror anthology, "Not at Night" which contained HPL's "The Horror at Red Hook". The inscription reads, "For Herbert Asbury, a past master on witches, with old friendship. Herbert Gorman". The book is housed in a custom clam-shell
