London: William Hodge & Company, Limited, 1945. British first edition. Hardcover. This is the British first edition, scarce thus, near fine in a scarce, very good minus dust jacket. The khaki cloth binding, with its red spine banner running the vertical length of the spine, is square, clean, and tight, with sharp corners and minimal shelf wear. The contents, printed on "Book Production War Economy Standard" paper, are crisp and clean, mildly age-toned, but with no previous ownership marks or spotting. The dust jacket is unclipped, retaining the original lower front flap price, and nearly complete, with fractional loss confined to the extremities of the joints and flap folds. The jacket is nonetheless toned overall, significantly to the spine, which also has an angled closed tear at the head, and there is some black ink soiling – appearing to be from an inky finger – to the right edge of the front face, with a partial inky fingerprint to the blank rear flap. The jacket is protected beneath a clear, removable, archival cover. Fittingly, Bureaucracy was published in the United Kingdom in 1945, the same year that wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s coalition government fell to a Labour landslide in the July General Election, Bureaucracy argued against the prevailing public sentiment that bureaucracies are inherently both inefficient and undemocratic.
