First Edition of this scarce schoolbook. "This is a history book about us. It is about a history that has been denied us by lies about what we are and what we have been." A painfully vivid and lavishly illustrated volume, written by two Civil Rights activists, offering raw, powerful sketches of select figures and events in African-American history, including the American Revolution, Civil War, Black Cowboys, Reconstruction, and "Women in the Movement." Originally intended only for young black pupils enrolled in "freedom schools" of the South, particularly Mississippi, the text attracted a wider allegiance and was revised in a second printing for a wider audience a year later. The first book to feature the graphic of the defiant clenched black fist on its cover, originally designed as a woodcut, entitled simply "The Hand," by author Frank Cieciorka. Many historians credit Cieciorka with the origin of the graphic. The only copy of the first printing of this title we've ever encountered. Publisher's original stappled wraps.
