Unknown to many and missing from most Hazlitt collections, this 1933 title, out-of-print for many years, was published just before Hazlitt succeeded H L Mencken as editor of The American Mercury, which attracted many conservative contributors. Hazlitt was not yet an Austrian economist or a supporter of Ludwig von Mises, but one can first discern here in Anatomy his earliest inclinations in that direction. As early as 1933, Hazlitt radiated here the kind of intensity that one can imagine changing the course of history. Anatomy is not merely a work critical of literary formalism; it also exposes the hypocrisy and contradictions of Marxist literary criticism, specifically of the notion of "economic privilege" as the basis of literary texts. Thus, Henry Hazlitt the ground-breaking economist was yet unknown but was emerging. Exactly 24 years after Hazlitt's The Anatomy of Criticism was published (and rapidly went out of print), Canadian literary theorist Northrop Frye would publish a book with the exact same title.
