First edition
New York: D. Appleton and Co, 1866. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo, 192pp., illustrated by John Tenniel. A very good copy in the publisher's red cloth. Neatly recased in its original binding, preserving the original endpapers, and expertly rebacked, preserving nearly all of the original spine, with reinforcement from new-old stock red cloth purchased from the descendant of a mid-19th century Victorian cloth salesman, and which bears the same grain and color of that used for the first edition of "Alice." Very light touch-ups to corners. Two handsome bookplates to the front endpapers. Internally very fresh, and with no internal restoration. Housed in an early 20th century red cloth slipcase, backed in red morocco, with red cloth chemise. The American issue of the first edition, which was actually printed before the English edition. Here's the story: Dodgson had the Clarendon Press print a run of 2,000 copies in the summer of 1865, intended to be published and distributed by Macmillan. Discussing the edition with Tenniel, the illustrator, he ultimately decided that the printing quality was not up to par, and he had it reprinted. Of those 2,000 copies, only 48 were retained by Dodgson himself for presentation, and only 22 of those survive. Another 1,000 of them were sold to D. Appleton in New York, and shipped there, where they were supplied with a new title page bearing the Appleton imprint. As such, these copies bearing the Appleton imprint represent the first edit
