Nile explorer and biblical scholar Charles Beke's Discoveries of Sinai in Arabia recounts his final 1874 expedition undertaken in an attempt to show that the true Mount Sinai was situated at the head of Gulf of Aqaba on the Eastern side. Although Beke felt he proved his hypothesis, it was not widely believed. Nevertheless his expedition provides a good survey of the region and predates the expeditions of his fellow Nile explorer, Richard Burton, in Midian.
