Published in London in 1892 under the authority of the Governments of the Australian Colonies, Handbook of Australian Fungi by renowned British mycologist Mordecai Cubitt Cooke represents the first comprehensive monograph devoted exclusively to the fungi of Australia. It documents over 2,000 species of fungi, slime moulds and related organisms and remains one of the landmark publications in Australian botanical literature. Prepared using specimens supplied by leading colonial botanists including Baron Ferdinand von Mueller, Flora Martin and F. M. Bailey, the work became the standard nineteenth-century reference for Australian mycology and continues to be cited today for its historical importance. Beautifully illustrated with 36 engraved plates (20 in colour) containing approximately 377 individual figures, the volume is both scientifically significant and visually impressive.
