The Sectional System of Ladies' Garment Cutting. Second edition of a foundational tailoring book, with patterns to be altered for various bodies, such as the "Lop-sided" and "Corpulent Form". This work includes blocks for "Cycling Skirts", "Military" and "Driving Jackets". Joseph Patrick Thornton (1882/3-1935), was listed in the 1901 census as "tailor" and in that of 1911 as "pattern cutter". He was a director and taught at the Thornton Institute off Oxford Street and the Minister's Cutting Academy, whose alumni included the founder of the Parisian house Cifonelli.This work was first published in 1901 according to Seligman, following The Sectional System of Gentlemen's Garment Cutting (1893). The title page locates the Thornton Institute at Castle Street East--officially renamed Eastcastle Street in 1918-- so this copy was likely printed between 1901 and 1918.
