Book Club Edition: red dot next to the spine. 273 pages. 5.5” x 8.25”. Sweet Thursday (1954) is the sequel to John Steinbeck’s (1902–1968) 1945 book Cannery Row. The character Doc, based on Steinbeck’s longtime friend marine biologist Ed Ricketts, returns to Cannery Row after serving in WWII. The book was adapted into Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 1955 musical Pipe Dream, which Steinbeck anticipated—the knowledge seems to have affected his writing style, as it deviates from the first book. .
