The Works. Third collected edition, small paper issue, representing the final editorial effort of Burke's ally and executor, French Laurence. Above all, it is Burke's "writings that have kept him in the mainstream of the Western political and intellectual tradition" (ODNB).Laurence, along with Walker King, began the project of collecting Burke's work during his lifetime, issuing the first volumes in 1792. Burke's revisions and notes to this edition were incorporated in that of the third. The third edition "constituted for that time the 'definitive edition'" (Todd) until further material was added in 1812.This handsomely bound set has the bookplates of the naval captain George Henry Towry (1767–1809) and Edward Law, earl of Ellenborough (1790–1871), who served as governor-general of India (1842–44).
