The author's first novel, a supernatural tale of shipwreck and the cursed land the survivors encounter. H.P. Lovecraft was a great admirer of Hodgson's, writing in his essay "Supernatural Horror in Literature" that "The brooding menace in the earlier parts of the book is impossible to surpass."
