The Pit and the Pendulum" is a short story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe and was first published in 1842 in the literary annual The Gift: A Christmas and New Year's Present for 1843. Octavo, original full straight-grain dark red calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spines and covers, all edges gilt. Book very good, some wear and chipping at spine ends, some soiling, foxing throughout, former owner's name on front free end paper, bookstore sticker on front paste-down, pages 247-250 are almost totally detached and there is a tear horizontally on all of these pages and the protective paper for the plate on verso of p. 250 has a piece missing, in rear last few pages and end papers and rear paste-down have water stain along bottom. gutters cracked.
