Friends, Foes and Foreigners. First edition, presentation copy to Anthony Eden, inscribed by the author on the title page, "For Anthony Eden, in friendship, R. Bruce Lockhart, London, 26th October 1957". The gift came nine months after Eden's resignation as Prime Minister.Lockhart was a British diplomat, secret service operative, and author of the highly successful Memoirs of a British Agent (1932). He worked primarily in Russia and was arrested after being accused of plotting to assassinate Vladimir Lenin in 1918. Only an exchange deal for a Russian spy being held in Britain meant he avoided execution. Lockhart also helped Evgenia Petrovna Shelepina, Leon Trotsky's secretary and the lover of the author Arthur Ransome, to escape Russia in 1919, enabling her and Ransome to marry in 1924. This work comprises vignettes from across Lockhart's life, focusing on memorable individuals he encountered throughout the course of his career.
