A Ride Through the Nubian Desert. First edition of this travelogue through Egypt and Sudan. Sir William Peel (1824-1858) fought at Sevastopol and Inkerman before serving in the Indian Rebellion. He was one of the first recipients of the Victoria Cross, "a legendary Victorian hero... [whose] death deprived the navy of one of its most brilliant officers" (ODNB).This volume consists of Peel's notes from his travels and a detailed meteorological journal. "In 1851 [Peel], being on half-pay, set out with J. Churi (i.e. Yusuf Khuri), a Syrian Maronite educated in Rome, on a visit to the Sudan in order to explore the interior of Africa; the travellers reached Khartoum by way of the Nubian desert route and thence visited al-Ubaiyad where both caught fever" (Hill, p. 304).
