John Bernard Seely, Mottistone Manor, Isle of Wight, May 5th 1931".General Sir John Duncan (1872-1942) commanded the Shanghai Defence Force in 1927, a British tri-service formation created to protect British and other foreign nationals and property in Shanghai's International Settlement during the upheavals of the Northern Expedition and related labour unrest. Mottistone Seely served as Secretary of State for War from 1912 to 1914. He fought on the western front throughout the First World War, the only former cabinet member to do so. His autobiography covers this and other adventures, both military and political.
