A VIEW OF SOUTH-CAROLINA, AS RESPECTS HER NATURAL AND CIVIL CONCERNS. The superb Siebert copy of Drayton's great work on South Carolina, one of only 500 copies printed. Drayton became governor of South Carolina in January 1800 and served until December 1802. This book was composed and written during that period, when he travelled extensively throughout the state, including the more remote reaches of the upper country. His wide-ranging interests and position led him to accumulate materials on practically every aspect of life in South Carolina at the time, including natural history; Indians; minerals; raising rice, tobacco, and corn; inland navigation; commerce and manufactures; and various social and charitable activities. Drayton's work is well illustrated, with a large map of South Carolina, one of the Santee Canal, and plates showing the State House, rice cultivation, and fossils discovered in the up-country.After the book was completed, Drayton obtained a map of Winyaw Bay and had a postscript and the map printed and tipped into some copies. This copy contains this rare insert, both the postscript and map, frequently lacking; copies often do not have a complete complement of plates and maps, and even the Streeter copy lacked the map of South Carolina. A superb copy in absolutely original condition.
