Cave tells McCauley that he has written to Toni Simmons, an editor at Ballantine Books, in response to her request for literary submissions by Cave. Cave responded with a synopsis of a short novel, which he encloses, along with a copy of his letter to Simmons. He leaves it up to McCauley as how best to proceed at this point. The novel is set in the Caribbean, like most of Cave's work he notes in his letter to Simmons that he spent 5 years in Haiti researching voodoo, then 17 in Jamaica running
