The book is dedicated to Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Aytoun 1813-1865 a Scot, published poetry, translation, prose fiction, criticism and satire and was a lifelong contributor to the Edinburgh literary periodical Blackwood's Magazine where he was on staff from 1839 to the end of his life.
