Collected in the book Los funerales de la Mama Grande (1962), it was the first published piece of fiction by Márquez to appear in book form, and his first prize for fiction, this one from the Columbian Association of Writers and Artists (he later won the Nobel). At the time he was working as a reporter for El Espectador, the Bogotá daily, and had published dozens of stories, but was mostly considered a journalist, rather than a narrative writer (Klein).
