Tom Brown's School Days.

£125 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books

Handsomely bound in red morocco by Relfe Brothers, this edition of Thomas Hughes' widely popular novel is wonderfully illustrated by Arthur Hughes and Sydney Prior Hall. Like the original, this edition is published as being 'by an Old Boy' rather than the author's real name. This was likely to protect Hughes' blossoming legal career while lending the novel, itself based on his own school experiences, more autobiographical weight. Sixth illustrated edition, 8vo (18 x 12 cm); prize bookplate to front pastedown, frontispiece engraving in black and white with a further 57 illustrations throughout, page stitching slightly loose in places, otherwise very good internal condition with minimal signs of age; full red morocco by Relfe Brothers with gilt border, spine decorated in gilt with contrasting black morocco lettering-piece, spine in 6 compartments with raised bands, spine head cap slightly chipped, a little rubbed, marbled edges, very good; xvi, 308 pp.
