This first edition traces the development of the gold and silversmith from the Middle Ages, through to the Renaissance and the Restoration, ultimately arriving at the Modern period, including chapters on hall-marking, falsification, and heraldic engraving, as well as the history and styles of the dinner service. This work was written by C. C. Oman, an assistant keeper in the department of metalwork at the Victoria and Albert Museum, as part of the museum's "Library of English Art" series. It features twenty-four photographs and illustrations of some of the finest metalwork in all of Britain. First edition, 8vo (22 x 14.5 cm); twenty-four pages of illustrations from photographs and two from line drawings in black and white, with black and white frontispiece, very good internal condition with minimal age-toning to pages; full calf with tooled centrepiece in gilt, spine lettered in gilt with gilt tooling in six compartments, top edge stained yellow, minor spotting to upper boards and minimal signs of wear to extremities, very good.
