A well-preserved example of this scarce polyglot Bible in English printed for Samuel Bagster with over 60,000 parallel references. 'Bagster was determined to meet the need for inexpensive polyglot bibles. A Hebrew Bible and Septuagint, both in foolscap octavo, soon appeared, but the production of English bibles was a monopoly in the United Kingdom, confined to the king's printers in England, Scotland, and Ireland, and to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. However, the patent did not apply to bibles with printed notes' (ODNB). Foolscap 8vo (16.5 x 10.5 cm); vignette-title, pencil notes in shorthand to endpapers, dated ownership inscription in pen to front free endpaper recto, a little toned; contemporary black morocco, Regnecy design in blind to covers, spine lettered in gilt, original white-metal clasps, all edges gilt, a little rubbed, very good.
