The original purple cloth binding is well-preserved with bright, unrubbed gilt lettering and a central thimble device to the front board. The front board exhibits a vertical strip of mild sunning or darkening near the spine hinge, and the corners are lightly bumped. The rear board is clean, retaining the original '6s net' pricing stamped in gilt to the lower corner. Internally, the pages are crisp, bright, and tightly bound with no loose leaves, foxing, or internal markings. Catalogue Note: First edition, first printing of this charming children's story, issued without a dust jacket. The text is wonderfully accompanied by six full-page, black-and-white illustrations by Duncan Grant, a prominent figure in the Bloomsbury Group alongside Woolf. The story was famously discovered by Wallace Hildick in 1963, nestled within the manuscript of Mrs. Dalloway at the British Museum. Originally written for Woolf's niece, Ann Stephen, the tale was first published in The Times Literary Supplement in 1965 before receiving this separate Hogarth Press publication in 1966, which saw a limited print run of 4,000 copies.
