First edition · Signed · In dust jacket
New York: Random House, 1985. First Edition. Fine/Very Good. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY McCARTHY. McCarthy's masterpiece and one of the most influential works of the 20th century. Inscribed in ink on the half-title: "For Garret / All best / Your friend / Cormac". The recipient is the American actor Garret Dillahunt who appeared as Wendell in the movie version of No Country for Old Men and as a gang member in the film adaptation of The Road. "In the entire range of American literature, only Moby-Dick bears comparison to Blood Meridian. Both are epic in scope, cosmically resonant, obsessed with open space and with language, exploring vast uncharted distances with a fanatically patient minuteness. Both manifest a sublime visionary power that is matched only by still more ferocious irony. Both savagely explode the American dream of manifest destiny of racial domination and endless imperial expansion. But if anything, McCarthy writes with a yet more terrible clarity than does Melville." (Shaviro, Steven, "A Reading of Blood Meridian"; Southern Quarterly. 30 (4); 1992). New York: Random House, 1985. Octavo, original half red cloth over red boards, original pictorial dust jacket. It appears the rear board was bumped at some point, causing a triangular closed tear to rear panel of dust jacket and corresponding light abrasion to cloth. Otherwise the book is near-fine and the jacket exceptionally bright. Note: A custom box is available for an additional $250.
