Lion Heart Autographs, Inc., New York, autograph seller s catalogue, 2003. Edition of 1000 copies. Cloth-backed boards, silver cover-title and fleuron, 4to,. 147, [2] pp, ills. 100 items. The Book Collector noted that the catalogue was issued to celebrate [Lion Heart s] 25th anniversary, and contains not just autographs but a hundred documents of significant historic importance. If half the documents are post-1900, this in no way diminishes the total effect, impressive in the extreme. All are reproduced and described at great length. The earlier part begins with a fine letter from Queen Elizabeth I to the Count Palatine John Casimir in an eminently identifiable scribal hand, but with the Queen s magisterial signature, and also includes others from Jefferson to Thomas Paine, from Beethoven on behalf of his muse Dorothea von Ertmann, Jane Austen to her niece Caroline, Mendelssohn .. and Chopin to his publisher. The later part was distinguished by charming photographs signed by Stephen Crane and Mahler, and important letters from Freud, Einstein and Max Born. Printed price-list laid-in. The catalogue introduction refers to an accompanying audio-CD which is not present here. Otherwise Near Very Good.
