Publisher's original black cloth; titled in gilt to spine; Smaug vignette in gilt, ruby, and white to upper board; all edges sprinkled blue; black marbled end-papers. In the original sugar-paper dust-wrapper. Housed within original black clamshell box, titled to label on upper box. Upper box cracked to two corners; a few spots and a little soiling to inside of box. Wrapper torn; one flap detached; the other inexpertly repaired with tape. Cloth bright and fresh; the binding strong and square. Internally crisp. Very faint tobacco aroma. A near-fine copy in serviceable dust-jacket and box. The superbly presented first deluxe edition of 'The Hobbit', complete with the highly fragile sugar-paper wrapper.
