First edition of Ginsberg's exuberant gathering of the poems he scribbled between 1953 and 1960, ranging from tender elegy to Beat travelogue and visionary fragment. Duodecimo, original printed wrappers as issued, number eighteen in the Pocket Poets series. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the title page with inked rays around the title and an eye beneath it, "For David and Naomi Savage, after two long decades all still alive and making Earth beautiful. Love, Allen Ginsberg, Oct 15, '64." The recipient, Naomi Siegler Savage, was a highly innovative photographer who lived and worked in Princeton, New Jersey, best known as the niece and protégée of the legendary Dada and Surrealist artist Man Ray, under whose mentorship in Hollywood she developed her signature experimental approach to the photographic medium. Influenced by Man Ray's techniques, Savage pioneered the use of the photographic metal plate, producing three-dimensional forms with metallic surfaces, and her best-known work is a magnesium mural for the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in Austin, Texas. Her work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Fogg Museum at Harvard, and the International Center of Photography.
