Memoirs. Author of the "Sylva," &c. &c. Comprising his diary, from 1641 to 1705-6, and a selection of his familiar letters. Third edition. Covering his student days until the year before his death, Evelyn's Memoirs were first published in 1818, seven years before those of Samuel Pepys. The published diaries and correspondence cover such topics as arts and culture, the English Civil War and Cromwell's protectorate, and the last Plague and Great Fire of London. Although William Bray is credited on the title page, the original manuscripts used for these volumes were extensively edited by William Upcott, who added additional materials excluded from the first edition to the second and third. The latter was a librarian and antiquary, known well by significant figures like William Blake. He possessed an extensive collection of books, prints and autograph letters, many of which were acquired by the British Museum and Library following his death.
