Octavo. 6.5 x 9.5 inches. viii + 114 pp. Folding map of the route of the conquistadors through Mexico at rear. Attractive book plate of one Frederick A. Kilmer on the front pastedown. Fine in original rose cloth decorated in silver on the upper cover and lettered in silver on the spine and in a very good pictorial dust jacket with chipping to spinal extremities and toning. This long poem, highly praised by Hemingway, won the MacLeish's first Pulitzer Prize. He would go on to win two more as well as a Bollingen Prize, and the National Book Award and others. Signed in 1963 by Archibald MacLeish on the front free endpaper where he has also transcribed the last two lines of this poem.
