With fifty illustrations by John Tenniel. London : Macmillan and Co., 1872 (actually printed December 1871). First edition, first issue. Octavo, gilt-lettered red cloth with gilt rule and image of the Queen of Hearts to upper and lower boards (edges rubbed, stained), all edges gilt, hinges cracked, contemporary owner s name to endpaper dated 1876, pp. [xii], 224; (2 advertisements), with numbering present on pp. 95 and 98, frontispiece illustration with tissue guard and other illustrations by Tenniel, text block a little shaken, a couple of small marks but generally clean, a good copy, unrestored in the original binding. The first state of the first edition of Carroll s masterwork of children s literature, with the edition point of the word wabe is misprinted as wade in the Jabberwocky poem on page 21. This misprint was corrected in subsequent printings. Sheets G and H each occur in two states, with or without the page-numbers 95 and 98; this copy has both page-numbers correctly printed, no priority being shown to this point.
