McAlmon was the sister of the modernist poet, novelist, and publisher Robert McAlmon, being well acquainted with her brother's close literary collaborators.In 1956, Victoria McAlmon inherited the books and archives of her brother's collection and worked steadfastly to preserve his reputation and influence from that time on. Williams opens this book of recollections by stating, "determined women have governed my fate". He proceeds to blend poetry and prose to form an eloquent depiction of the life and character of his mother.
