CATLIN, George.

Manners, Customs, and Condition of the North American Indians. A later edition of this classic account of the people's Catlin encountered during his 12 years of intensive ethnographical research. The first edition was published in 1841, and the work was frequently reprinted. Although dated 1841 on the title page, editions from later in the 19th century have all the plates printed in colour. Catlin wished to alert America to the value of Native American culture before it disappeared. He toured the world with his "Indian Gallery," the vast collection of paintings amassed during his travels. His writings are probably the most reliable 19th-century description of Native American culture.
