The History of England First editions of all but volumes I and II, which are third editions. The Histories were "designed to outsell the bestselling novel of the day", and achieved "a success such as no historical work in the English language has had since Gibbon" (PMM).Macaulay was consciously working to popularise history, bearing his Whiggish message of progress and improvement. "Each volume sold 150,000 copies within months of its publication, and the numerous reprints and translations into almost every literary language have perpetuated Macaulay's ideas almost to this day" (PMM). The final volume was edited posthumously from Macaulay's papers by his sister Lady Trevelyan.
