Buckett served in the Artists Rifles before the Second World War, was commissioned as a temporary second lieutenant in the Royal Marines soon after its outbreak, and was promoted to temporary captain in October 1941. The 1943 Navy List records him at HMS Copra, the shore establishment responsible for the records, pay and drafting of personnel assigned to Combined Operations, an organization central to preparations for D-Day.On 1 May 1944, a month before D-Day, he was appointed acting temporary major and simultaneously assigned to the staff of Commodore Force "G", the naval assault force responsible for Gold Beach. On D-Day, Buckett served aboard HMS Bulolo, the headquarters ship from which the naval assault and offshore operations at Gold Beach were controlled. A folder marked "TOP SECRET" contains a series of maps of northern France, including Creully, Cherbourg, and Caen, together with the chartlet of Gold Beach bearing the classification "BIGOT - TOP SECRET".
