Oeuvres complètes. First edition of the monumental Édition Nationale, number 75 of 200 sets printed on japon from a total run of 1,000 sets with a duplicate set of illustrations. This handsomely bound set is augmented by two supplementary sets offered to subscribers: a full set of etchings on silk, and the first five parts of additional biographical material.In 1884 Hugo contracted with Testard to produce a definitive quarto edition of his collected works, illustrated by the leading artists of the period. Published over a decade, the project acquired an increasingly commemorative character following Hugo's death in 1885. Testard also issued six supplementary volumes for subscribers, comprising Louis Ulbach's Vie de Victor Hugo and Camille Pelletan's Victor Hugo homme politique. In 1898, the Lyon booksellers Bernoux et Cumin acquired the Édition Nationale. For subscribers they issued a suite of 30 etchings on silk printed after the theatrical illustrations in the edition. In this copy, they are bound uniformly with the text volumes of the original edition.
