Papered boards; top edge foxed; an excellent copy with the near-fine dustwrapper (lightly scuffed). The book contains a series of images 'dealing with the castle of Ludwig II ... "the Bavarian dream king" ... In this collection Kawada represents with clinical faithfulness the unique products of the insanity of Ludwig II, illuminating and recording the interior of an implacable spirit. The collection also expresses Kawada's own troubled interior world, so that it is in a way madness observing madness' (from the English-language afterword by Akira Hasegawa). The text is predominantly in Japanese (including all captions), with one page in French (quoting Paul Verlaine). Number 24 in the Sonorama Shashin Sensho series (which eventually ran to 27 volumes).
