Japan's Dream Age Author: NAGANO, Shigeichi Title: Japan's Dream Age Publication: Tokyo, Asahi Sonorama Co., Ltd., 1978 Edition: First Edition Description: Small square quarto, [120] pages with 107 pages containing illustrations from photographs by Shigeichi Nagano (and a portrait photograph of the artist on the last page). A return-address postcard from the publisher is loosely inserted. Papered boards; top edge a little foxed; minimal signs of age and use; an excellent copy with the excellent dustwrapper lightly scuffed and a little sunned around the spine. 'The photographs ... cover the period from the latter half of the 1950s through the EXPO '70 World Trade Exposition in Osaka, Japan, in 1970.... In my capacity as an editor, I was present at the sites where roughly half of these photographs were taken. To me they appear as attempts to portray in imagery the strains that occur in the rapid-growth process of a modern industrial society, along with the sense of estrangement and flustration [sic] which accompanies such growth.... [It] is a work to be ranked and remembered along with the works of Robert Frank ..., William Klein ... and Shomei Tomatsu' (from the English-language afterword by Shoji Yamagishi). The text is predominantly in Japanese (including all captions). Number 10 in the Sonorama Shashin Sensho series (which eventually ran to 27 volumes).
