Signed photograph of a painting showing Evans in dress uniform, presented to an Adelaide power couple at the conclusion of his Australia command. A commanding image of the polar veteran, inscribed by Evans on the mount, "To Jean and Lavington Bonython with love from E. R. G. R. Evans. 1929-31." During these years, Evans was head of the Australia station - his first flag command - and was soon "immensely popular in the commonwealth, where his unconventional ways were fully appreciated" (ADNB).Sir John Lavington Bonython (1875-1960) served as Lord Mayor of Adelaide from 1927 to 1930. Lady Jean Bonython (née Warren, 1891-1977) was likewise politically active: "Renowned for her leadership and hard work, she was a member of some twenty-five committees and made her greatest contributions to those concerned with women and children" (ADNB). On arriving in Australia, Evans was received in Adelaide by the Bonythons and other dignitaries, and he stayed with them when he visited Australia 17 years later.The painting is signed "Bowring 1927" in the photograph, although the identity of the artist is unknown. This photograph is offered with another framed photograph (unsigned) of Evans, presumably taken during his command.
