I Was a German. First edition in English, charting his service in the First World War, conversion to socialism, leadership of the Bavarian Soviet Republic, and imprisonment for high treason. Completed in exile after Hitler's seizure of power, Toller's autobiography "is often considered to be his finest work: it is certainly an incisive and immensely readable account of his early years" (Dove pp. 201-2).The work was first published in German as Eine Jugend in Deutschland in Amsterdam the previous year. This London edition was published in February 1934, preceding the American edition of March.
