A Memoir by His Son, The Edition de Grande Luxe of the poet's biography written by his son, number 16 of 1,000 copies. Published five years after the death of the Victorian Poet Laureate, the volumes were intended to anticipate any possible inauthentic biographies. The biography was carefully curated; Lord Hallam Tennyson and his mother, according to the late poet's wishes, had destroyed many of the 40,000 letters he had left behind. The preface states that Tennyson's poems and words are used to reveal the "innermost sanctuary of his being", as "no biographer could so truly give him as he gives himself in his own works".
