Britain's Industrial Future. First edition, bound for presentation and signed by David Lloyd George and the committee chairman W. T. Layton, underneath the presentation inscription on the front free endpaper: "Presented to Mrs W. T. Layton with deep appreciation of her assistance as a member of the Liberal Industrial Inquiry 1926-8". Eleanor Dorothea Layton (1887-1959), a suffragist and politician, sat on the inquiry's labour and industrial committees. Lloyd George was fond of observing that between Eleanor and her husband, she was "much the best radical of the two" (Layton, p. 52).John Maynard Keynes was a member of the inquiry's executive committee and a major influence on the report, which proposed a substantial increase in the state management of industry. Britain's Industrial Future can therefore be seen as part of the move by the Liberal Party away from classical laissez-faire liberalism towards modern, interventionist liberalism.
