My Arabian Days and Nights: An American Missionary in Old Kuwait. First edition of this memoir by the first female physician to practise in Kuwait. "The hard struggle of Dr. Calverley to break through the crust of superstition and resistance to a woman doctor bringing 'Christian' medicine from the West can best be followed in her own simple but moving autobiographical account" (DeNovo, p. 31).Calverley (1887-1968) "married Edwin E. Calverley, a missionary and preacher, on September 6, 1909, and together they trained for work in Arabia. They traveled to Kuwait in 1911, and she opened a small dispensary connected to her home so that Kuwaiti women, among others, could seek medical care... She and her husband spent many years in Kuwait. In 1919 a women's hospital opened there under her leadership" (Windsor, p. 41).
