HUME, David.

Essays and Treatises on Several Subjects. First quarto edition, revised and expanded by the author from the unauthorized four-volume duodecimo editions of 1753 onwards. This copy includes the two additional essays: "Of the Jealousy of Trade" and "Of the coalition of parties". A capacious work, the Essays collect Hume's major writings on epistemology, politics, religion, psychology, economics, and morality. It was Hume's essays, rather than his lengthier treatises, that brought him popular acclaim and commercial success: they were able to "draw attention to his philosophy in a format which for the first time was both accessible and calculated to encourage sales" (ODNB).
