Recipes and Instruction Book for Shanghai Power Company Electric Cookers. First edition, unrecorded institutionally, of this cookbook compiled by Mrs J. M. Watson, the proprietor of the Lewis Ideal School of Electric Cookery at 106 Szechuen Road. The recipes, primarily Western and covering "the plainest to the most elaborate of dishes", include soups, biscuits, scones, ices, "brighter breakfasts", and "convalescent cookery" (for those recovering from illness).Watson, whose name remains elusive, was the daughter of Major James Crombie Watson, one of the Victorian era's quintessential "old China hands." The Shanghai Power Company was formed in 1929 and ran oven showrooms on Nanjing Road and Bubbling Well Road and at several other locations in the city centre.
