(Introduction) ‘In between completing a theatre degree at Wimbledon School of Art and returning to a graduate programme at the Royal College of Art (RCA), Lubaina Himid held various paid and unpaid jobs - including designing the interior of Covent Garden restaurant Tuttons, making opera costumes and community work - to assemble an artistic life in London. Perhaps most remarkable in her early career was her knowledge of other artists and, specifically, her documentation of the work and persons of other black here, conceived of as African, Asian or Caribbean) artists in Britain. Himid was interested in the status of British black artists - who they were and what they were making were the questions that drove her research as she entered the MA programme at the RCA. What began as one artist's search for artists with similar political and social investments to herself developed into a seminal curatorial practice that introduced other artists into prominence, staged major exhibitions of black and Asian artists across Britain, defined independent curating for a generation of critics and curators and promoted the need for contemporary art history.
